Match your tool to your ground
Use this guide to spec the right air tool, rod, and bit combination based on your job site conditions.
| Ground type | Condition | Air tool | Drill rod | Drill bit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Soft ground | Clay / Sand / Fill | Handheld pneumatic hammer | 22 mm hex, 0.9 m starter | Cross / blade bit, 38–52 mm |
| Medium ground | Shale / Soft limestone | Pneumatic drifter (rock drill) | 22–25 mm hex, R25 thread | Button bit (ballistic), 45–64 mm |
| Hard rock | Granite / Basalt / Bedrock | Drifter or DTH hammer | R25 / H thread extension rods | Spherical button bit, 52–76 mm |
| Confined space | Any — low headroom | Any above — start short | Short starter (0.6 m) + extensions | Match to ground type above |

What Contractors Ask Most
Can I use an electric hammer drill for fence posts in rock?
Can I use an electric hammer drill for fence posts in rock?
Electric hammer drills work for light or occasional work in soft to medium rock, but they can't match the speed, durability, or cost-per-hole of a pneumatic system for repeated commercial use. For professional fence installation or any application in hard rock, a pneumatic drifter is the right tool.
What compressor size do I need to run a drifter?
What compressor size do I need to run a drifter?
Most handheld drifters require 100–200 CFM at 90–100 PSI. A trailer-mounted diesel compressor in the 185 CFM range is the standard field solution. Always check the tool's air consumption spec before sizing your compressor.
Which drill bit should I use for fence posts in rocky ground?
Which drill bit should I use for fence posts in rocky ground?
For hard rock, use a carbide button bit (45–64 mm) matched to your rod thread — Madido's R25 spike or ballistic button bits are the most common choice. For soft to medium ground, a cross or blade bit is more economical and still provides excellent performance.
How do I drill in a confined space with low headroom?
How do I drill in a confined space with low headroom?
Start with a short 0.6 m or 0.9 m starter rod and couple on extension rods as depth increases. This lets you begin drilling where a full-length rod simply won't fit. Madido stocks short starter rods specifically for this application.
Do drill rod threads need to match the bit exactly?
Do drill rod threads need to match the bit exactly?
Yes — thread mismatch is a leading cause of rod and bit failure in the field. Both the rod-to-tool and rod-to-bit connections must be compatible. If you're unsure, contact Madido's technical team and we'll confirm the correct thread spec for your existing equipment.
How long will carbide drill bits last on a fence project?
How long will carbide drill bits last on a fence project?
Bit life depends heavily on ground hardness. In soft limestone, a quality button bit may last several hundred meters. In abrasive granite, the same bit may last 20–50 meters. Using water flush where possible and regrinding buttons before they fully wear will significantly extend bit life. Madido also offers a reforging service for worn bits.
