Foundry tooling operates under repeated impact, abrasive contact and demanding access conditions. Selecting the working profile, steel specification and hammer interface around the process helps maintenance and production teams manage wear and tooling availability.
Tooling specified for the task
- Mold and core removal: points and chisels selected for access, material removal and the casting geometry.
- Casting cleaning and finishing: working profiles matched to trimming and localized removal requirements.
- Plant maintenance: percussion tooling for deposit removal and refractory maintenance where the equipment and work method are suitable.
Working-end width, overall length and connection geometry should be defined together. A longer tool or wider blade changes the loading conditions and requires review for the hammer and application.
In-house forging, machining and heat treatment
Madido manufactures steel percussion tooling in Montreal. Forging forms the working end, machining produces the specified connection geometry, and heat treatment is selected around the steel and service requirements.
For work involving elevated temperatures, include the expected conditions in the specification. A tool intended for general percussion work should not be assumed suitable for direct contact with hot metal or molten material.
Manage tooling as a maintenance requirement
Wear affects more than the replacement budget. Loss of the working profile can increase removal time, while unscheduled tool changes interrupt maintenance activities. Review tooling consumption alongside shutdown schedules, spare quantities and delivery requirements.
Where suitable, Madido's re-forging and reconditioning service provides an additional option for worn points and chisels. Eligibility depends on the tool's condition, remaining dimensions and intended reuse; damaged tooling requires assessment before reconditioning.
Compare total cost in service
Assess purchase or reconditioning cost together with useful working life, changeover time and removal performance. Records from comparable applications provide a stronger basis for procurement than general claims about durability.
Technical review for foundry applications
Share the hammer model, shank dimensions, working-end profile, required reach, operating conditions and observed wear. Drawings and photographs help define the requirement for standard or custom tooling.
