Re-forging and Reconditioning Industrial Points and Chisels

Re-forging and Reconditioning Industrial Points and Chisels

Madido |

Working-end wear is a recurring cost in demolition and industrial maintenance. For suitable steel points and chisels, re-forging and reconditioning provide an option to extend useful service before replacement.

Assess the tool before reconditioning

Suitability depends on the steel, remaining length and cross-section, shank condition and wear or damage. A worn tip and a cracked tool present different requirements. Each tool must be assessed against its condition and intended application.

Reconditioning is not appropriate for every tool. Where damage or remaining dimensions prevent a suitable result, replacement is the appropriate procurement option.

Restore the working profile

Madido's re-forging process uses controlled heating and hammer forming to reshape eligible working ends, with the required finishing and heat treatment reviewed for the tool. The objective is a defined working profile suitable for the next service period.

Re-forging differs from routine sharpening. It involves reshaping the steel and must account for the material and the tool's manufacturing requirements.

Evaluate the economics

Compare the quoted reconditioning price, transport, turnaround and remaining useful dimensions with the cost and availability of a replacement. In service, track material removal, wear rate and changeover frequency under comparable conditions.

Reconditioned tooling should be assessed against the agreed specification. Service life and savings depend on the individual tool and application; they should not be assumed identical to new tooling.

Material use and maintenance planning

Returning suitable steel tooling to service retains material already in the tool. The overall environmental benefit depends on transport, processing and the additional service obtained. Reconditioning can be incorporated into a planned rotation of working tools and spare inventory.

Submit tooling for assessment

Provide photographs, current dimensions, shank details, quantity and the intended application. Describe any cracking, mushrooming, chipping or previous repairs so the assessment reflects the tool's condition.
